A SEMINAL WORK ABOUT LITERACY FOR THE 21st CENTURY TEACHER

READ THE BOOK

Multiliteracies - literacy learning and the design of social futures edited by Bill Cope and Mary Kalantzis for the New London Group | 2000 | Publisher: Routledge |  On the cusp of the 21st century authors brought together past educational theories and literacy approaches. They then developed new models of literacy and pedagogies for "new times"; times of globalisation, and digital literacy. These included a literacy model that  incorporated multiple modes of literacy: linguistic, visual, gestural, spatial, audio with associated design elements.  Their theory of pedagogy comprised: situated practice, overt instruction, critical framing, and transformed practice. Contributing authors elaborate on these themes, offering examples of implementation.

A COMPREHENSIVE DETAILING OF ALL ASPECTS OF  ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERACY

Language and Learning - an introduction for teaching by Marie Emmitt, Linda Komesaroff and John Pollock | 2007 | Oxford University Press | Can be recommended for university Education lecturers as a textbook or as a handbook for teachers. This book carries on the concept found in Multiliteracies, that literacy and language are social and cultural practices. It quotes philosopher Wittgenstein who said, “The limits of my language mean the limits of my world” (p.3) to stress the importance of giving students, young and adult learners entre into social and cultural discourses of power and diversity through explicit language teaching. The book addresses “how can we, as teachers, improve our communication with our students, their parents and other community members” (p.43), not only via theoretical discussions but also by practical worked examples. In Australia we talk about literacy across the curriculum. This is the perfect book to enable teachers of diverse subjects to embed literacy teaching into their curricula.
